Henry Heads the Wrong Way

Every story needs a good beginninghis is the story of Henry the duck, but it’s a different Henry to the Henry you might know.   Because, not everybody knows this, but just about every duck is called Henry!

And this Henry lived in Australia.

Henry was very excited because it was almost winter and all the ducks were getting ready to fly somewhere warmer.   It was going to be Henry’s first long flight and he couldn’t wait to get going.   Henry already knew about ducks flying south for the winter, because he’d watched a television show about it once.   There was a shop near the fountain Henry loved to play in that had Televisions in its front window and one time, Henry had watched a show all about ducks.   Henry had learned all sorts of things from the show, things that even he hadn’t known and he was a duck.

The thing that had excited Henry the most was the news that every winter, ducks flew south to where the weather was warmer, so you can imagine his surprise when all of the ducks began talking about flying NORTH.

Henry was sure they were all about to make a big mistake but when he tried talking to some of the older ducks they just laughed and said, “Don’t worry Henry, it’ll be fine, you’ll see.”

Even Henry’s parents wouldn’t listen, they kept talking about living in the southern hemisphere and having to fly north to get to warmer weather.

Henry didn’t want to make a mistake on his first long flight and the television show had definitely said that ducks fly south.   What if they had to turn around and come back and Henry was too tired?

Henry was so sure they were about to make a big mistake that when the morning came to leave, Henry flew off in the opposite direction.

All day long Henry flew south and then all the next day as well.

But the further south Henry went, the colder it was getting and all the other ducks that Henry saw all seemed to be heading north.   Finally Henry was sure that he was the one making the big mistake and so he turned around and started flying north.

The problem was, it was going to take Henry two days just to get back to where he’d started from and he knew that the other ducks would be long gone.   He wasn’t sure how he was ever going to find his mother and father and all the other ducks he knew.

When Henry finally made it back to his lake he was very relieved to see that the other ducks were waiting for him.   Henry’s mother and father were very cross with him for flying off but they gave him a big cuddle and told him they were glad he was safe and that they’d been very worried for him.   Then everyone, including Henry, flew north to where it was warmer.

That year, Henry learned that the older ducks really did know what they were talking about and that they knew much more than he did, so from then on, Henry paid careful attention and tried to learn as much from them as he could.

And that’s the story of Henry the Duck.
