Henry Sees His Friends to Safety

Every story needs a good beginninghis is the story of Henry the duck, but it’s a different Henry to the Henry you might know. Because, not everybody knows this, but just about every duck is called Henry!

And this Henry was very short sighted.

Well truth be told he was virtually blind, he used to continually crash into things while flying and trip over things while walking. He also had a terrible time recognizing other ducks. This made it very difficult when he had to go looking for any particular duck.

But one day, a very kind vet who happened to be having lunch in the park, saw Henry crash into a tree and then proceed to trip over a branch AND a rock all in a very short space of time. He took Henry across the road to his clinic and did a few tests on Henry before dropping him back to the pond.

A few days later the vet was back again, only this time he had some goggles with him. It wasn’t hard for him to find Henry and it wasn’t particularly hard for him to catch Henry. In fact Henry never even saw him coming. Soon he’d slipped the goggles over Henry’s head and suddenly Henry could see. It was the most amazing thing that Henry had ever experienced and after quacking a “thank-you” to the kind vet Henry raced off to explore the pond. It was as though he was seeing everything for the first time!

However, it wasn’t long before Henry started to attract unwanted attention. The other ducks thought he looked hilarious in his goggles and many of them started teasing Henry and making fun of him. For Henry though it was a small price to pay for being able to see again.

That year, as things started to get cooler, Henry, for the first time ever, found himself looking forward to flying south for the winter. When the time finally came for the ducks to depart, Henry was more excited than he’d ever been because now he could see everything they flew over. To Henry it all looked wonderful and he could see every detail as they flew over rivers, towns and even mountains.

But it wasn’t long before the ducks were in a whole lot of trouble. Out of no-where a giant dust storm rolled in and soon none of the ducks could see where they were going. Every time they opened their eyes they got an eye full of dust.

Well, all except Henry. With his wonderful goggles Henry could still see perfectly and he knew exactly what to do.

Henry quickly flew to the front of the team and started quacking loudly for the other ducks to follow him. The other ducks were able to keep their eyes closed and follow the sound of Henry’s quacks and within a few hours they were finally clear of the dust storm. Not a single duck had gotten lost and not a single duck had been injured and it was all because of Henry.

From that day on, no one ever teased Henry about his goggles again and Henry was often asked to take the lead whenever the ducks flew south for the winter.

And that’s the story of Henry the duck.
